Tehran is the most populous city and capital of Iran. It is also home to the largest Persian-speaking population in the world. The history of settlement in what is now Metropolitan Area of Tehran dates back to Neolithic period (as long ago as 6000 BCE), as the archeological remains unearthed in nearby city of Rey suggests.

Statement of Tehran as a historical and cultural city

It was after being established as the capital in 1786 that Tehran grew from a small city to the major metropolis we know now. The rich history and culture are mainly reflected in its traditional architecture, best embodied in Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage. We have been working hard to preserve this culture and history and introduce them to the world in order to develop the identity of Tehran as a cultural-historical city with desired living standards.
